OPEN ENDING

Loving someone toxic means
commitment,
commitment to a montage.
You agree to be part of their
photoshoot.
You agree to be part of their
show.
Ending it feels like finishing
a movie
with an open ending.
Was she really bad?
Should I have forgiven her?
Did I really agree to this?
Did I really stay for this long?
Did I make a mistake?
Was this the right ending?
Whether you like it or not,
that’s the movie’s ending
as it is the cycle’s ending.

MOVING ON

Moving On
She’s there, I know.
She sees I’ve moved on.
Yeah, it does hurt.
I wish she would
realize she’s wrong.
Not better, just evolved.
I’m just faking
because this pain,
yeah, it’s on my own.
Healing without revealing
your scar is complex
but confronting and
hurting is far much worse

Vida. Created by Tanya Saracho, Big Beach and Chingona Productions, 2018-2020.

This show follows two, completely different, sisters who just found out about the death of their mother. This news brings them back to their childhood neighborhood, where they must bring their family’s bar back to life. The following poems were inspired by Emma’s complex relationship with her queer identity, as well as that with Cruz and Nico, her love interests in the show. Gaslighting was examined through their interactions.
