BREAKING TEST

Aren’t you already mine?

Maybe if I hit you,

just slightly,

you won’t break.

It will be our little test,

a loyalty quest,

to see if your love for me

will prevail,

even if it means the end.

I know I don’t deserve you,

but prefer to make it a question,

a game where you fail.

You’re mine, but are

you sure I’m yours?

Will you break so our

bond grows, holding us both?

AN UNDEAD GHOST

She is a ghost, her memory in my last post.

“Is she dead?” My friends ask me.

“Is she really dead?” My mom asks me.

I tell her she has been a ghost, for a long time now.

“Isn’t that her on the wall?” Sam asks me.

Our song pops up, and again, this ghost is next to me.

Headphones on, running the trail, can’t get her out of my head.

You’re dead. You’re dead. You’re dead.

I start to yell.

I turn off my phone; she isn’t here, no more.

But, “isn’t she dead?” I hear the murmur from my friends.

She is a ghost, and I, her grave to haunt.

Atypical. Created by Robia Sara Rashid, Exhibit A Weird Brain, Inc., 2018-2021.

This show follows Sam, a teenage boy on the autism spectrum, as his family’s ways of supporting him through life decisions and several stages of his life. My analysis focused on his sister, Casey. Specifically, I paid attention to her self-acceptance journey and her relationship with Izzie. The following poems were inspired by Casey’s journey and her relationship with Izzie. Gaslighting was examined through these dynamics.
